The Capital
Cuzco was the Inca's capital city. It is now a major tourist destination and receives over 2 million visitors a year. The aboriginal name for this city was Qusqu. Even though it was used in Quechua, it's origin has been in Aymara language. Some people believe it was planned as a representation of a puma, a sacred animal. Many buildings made after the Spaniards came have a Spanish influence as well as Incan architecture. The Spanish destroyed many of the Inca's palaces, temples and buildings. They used the walls that were left to build their own city. In 1950, an earthquake destroyed a third of the city's buildings. Right now, Cuzco is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Peru.
